Difference between breast lift and breast augmentation
Breast lift and breast augmentation are sometimes misconstrued as the same, which is a mistake. These are two different procedures with dissimilar objectives. Let’s check these differences.
Breast augmentation is a mammoplasty procedure that makes use of implants such as a silicone shell filled with silicone gel or saline solution or it can involve the transfer of fat from one body part of the patient to the breast. Breast lift, on the other hand involves removing excess skin to recontour and reshape the breast plus reposition the nipples.
Breast augmentation is meant to increase the size of the breast to enhance its projection and fullness. It is also meant to add volume to the breast which has lost its volume after a pregnancy or considerable weight loss. Meanwhile,a breast lift cannot enlarge and add volume to the breast. What it does is to lift, reshape or recontour sagging breast by removing excess skin and resetting the remaining skin and repositioning the nipples to enhance the appearance of the breast. The procedure can also scale down the size of the skin around the nipple called the areola.
A recommended procedure
More and more plastic surgeons are recommending a breast augmentation mastopexy to their clients who want to improve the size of their breast as well as enhance its shape and reposition the nipple. It is a procedure which is a combination of breast augmentation and breast lift particularly for women with exceptionally vacuous breasts with drooping nipples. They will need a larger amount of implant and a repositioning of the nipple to the center of the mound.
The procedure starts with a regular mammoplasty or breast augmentation which involves the insertion of a breast implant and ends with breast lift or mastopexy to reshape and recontour the breast and position the areola and nipple at the center of the breast mound.
A breast augmentation mastopexy procedure is a more challenging procedure for plastic surgeons than performing the two procedures in isolation. It is open to a higher risk of complication, but in some specific cases, this is the most applicable procedure.
