Drug abuse can cause deterioration of mental health as well as physical. There are quite a few mental disorders associated with drug use. In some cases, individuals may have had the mental disorder prior to using drugs. However, drug use often exacerbates any pre-existing conditions. Let’s look at a few of the most common mental disorders that can be caused by using drugs.

1. Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders of all, and drug use can contribute to symptoms of depression. While people are sometimes motivated to take mood-altering substance because of depression, drugs can cause more extreme fluctuations in mood. Thus, people who use drugs such as amphetamines or cocaine for stimulation often experience severe bouts of depression when they start to come down from the highs caused by the drug.

2. Anxiety

Anxiety is another disorder that is often caused by drug abuse. Use of almost any drug can cause anxiety. Very often, the user becomes aware of this when the effects of the drug start to wear off. This may motivate them to take more drugs in ever increasing dosages, which sets off a vicious cycle.

3. Sleep Disorders

Many drugs interfere with natural sleep cycles. This becomes a serious problem if someone is unable to sleep for long periods of time. Sleep deprivation can not only harm one’s physical health but it can lead to delusions and hallucinations in extreme cases.

4. Toxic Psychosis

Toxic psychosis or substance-induced psychosis is one of the most serious mental disorders that can be caused by drugs. This occurs when a person develops delusions or hallucinations due to drug use. This can occur by taking large doses of almost any drug, including alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine and many others. It can also occur if someone takes a dangerous combination of drugs, which may include prescription medications.

5. Substance-Induced Dementia

Dementia refers to mental disorders such as memory loss, difficulty with language or other cognitive functions. Long term drug users sometimes develop symptoms that are similar to those found in Alzheimer’s patients. In the case of drug users, however, this can occur at any age.

Drug use can cause a variety of mental disorders. This will depend on the type of drugs taken and any pre-existing tendencies of the user. The problem of substance-induced mental disorders is one of the reasons why people who abuse drugs need prompt treatment at a licensed drug rehab center for their addictions.
