Sometimes, despite how much we try to take care of our teeth, we still develop problems such as gingivitis. Here are 4 ways to prevent gingivitis and maintain your dental health.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a periodontal disease where the gums become red, swollen and inflamed. However, if gingivitis is not treated promptly, it can lead to periodontists, which is not only more serious but can also cause even more health problems. A Thorough Cleaning

Although giving your teeth a thorough cleaning seems almost too easy and way too obvious, it’s surprising how many people don’t realize that providing teeth with a thorough cleaning is more than just brushing and /or flossing every day. Flossing should be done prior to brushing so it can loosen up food particles and bacteria and make it easier to brush them out. Flossing without brushing or brushing without flossing will not sufficiently clean your teeth. Smoking has, for many years, been linked as the main culprit causing cancer and other respiratory programs. However, smoking does more damage than just to the lungs. Smoking weakens your gums and can cause gum inflammation, making your teeth more susceptible to gingivitis. If you already suffer from gingivitis, smoking will also lengthen the time it takes to heal.

A Good Diet

Maintaining good dental health also requires a diet of healthy and nutritious foods. If you must eat in between meals, make sure you brush or floss after eating. Drinking plenty of water is not only good for you but will help increase your saliva and assist in flushing out plaque.

Regular Checkups
Keeping regular checkups with your dentist may also seem like an obvious choice to prevent gingivitis and other dental problems. However, many people tend to avoid going to the dentist until they have a problem. Sometimes, by this point, the problem may be severe and require extra care and treatment. By visiting your dentist regularly, like every six months, your dentist will be able to spot any issues in your mouth before they become a problem.
