There are over 200 different types of cancer in the world. About 15 percent of all cancers are related to infections. If you are worried that you might get cancer, then there are some ways to limit your risk of getting cancer from infections.

Wash Your Hands

The easiest way to stop an infection from spreading is to wash your hands often. You should wash your hands for at least 30 seconds starting above the wrists while letting the water run off your fingertips. While hand sanitizers containing at least 60 percent alcohol can be helpful in a pinch, you should wash your hands with soap and water as often as possible. When you do this, rub your hands together vigorously. To help make sure that you wash for more than a few seconds, you may find it helpful to sing to yourself—either in your head or out loud—the chorus of one of your favorite songs.

Spend Time Outdoors

Germs are less likely to spread outdoors while they are more likely to spread in areas where people are in close contact. Exercising outdoors has been shown to be especially beneficial in stopping the risk of getting cancer. You may also want to consider gardening for both the outdoors benefit but also for having better food to cook with. Eating nutritiously has been shown to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

Consider Fasting

Research out of the University of South Carolina suggests that fasting may help reduce your risks of getting cancer. According to the research, fasting for just three days is like doing a hard reset to a phone allowing the body to create new white blood cells while destroying damaged cells. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity. Finally, it may help you achieve a normal weight which helps reduce your risk of getting cancer.

Take a Mental Health Vacation

Immunoglobulin A levels naturally increase when you are relaxed, and this is your body’s first line of defense for stopping infections that might lead to cancer. Relaxing also helps to reduce cortisol levels in the body allowing you to feel more relaxed. Go ahead and take a mental health vacation. You can choose to crank up the tunes, read your favorite book, do a hobby or participate in any other activity that you enjoy.

If you already have received the news that you have cancer due to an infection, then contact a professional, such as those at Valley View. It’s important that you take advantage of any therapies that could help you as soon as possible.
