Gone are the days where moms and dads make the child sit at the table until their veggies are all eaten. Heck, we might be to a point where veggies just aren’t even served very often period, and if they are on the table, their consumption is far from enforced. This may make for a few less tears at the dinner table, possibly a more peaceful meal, but make no mistake-there is a high price for this shift in the types of foods that are pleasing our tastebuds.

  1. Weight Gain/Obesity: Poor diet, combined with a lack of exercise can potentially lead to obesity. This is defined as having a body mass index of 30 or higher. Not only does obesity contribute to many diseases of the body, it can also cause sleep issues, respiratory problems, arthritis and joint pain and degeneration, gynecological problems in women, and mental and emotional issues often due to poor self-esteem and lack of social interaction.
  2. CardiovascularDisease: The foods we choose to consume directly affect the health of our heart and blood vessels. Certain foods, such as red meat contain a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol and lead to plaque build-up on the walls of the arteries. This makes it difficult for blood to be delivered and causes the health of the arteries to fail as well as places unnecessary stress on the heart and can even lead to heart attack.
  3. Type II Diabetes: The number one risk factor for Type II diabetes is obesity. The more fatty tissue an individual has, the more resistant the cells become to the insulin. Normally, insulin works to help get sugar into the cells where it can be used for energy by the body. In the case of type 2 diabetes, the insulin is ineffective and can create major health concerns as too much sugar accumulates in the blood leading to blood vessel damage, nerve damage, and kidney damage just to name a few.

Just as diet can work against us and sabotage our health, there are also foods that we can eat that will benefit our health. These are things like fruits, vegetables, high fiber foods and unsaturated fats and fats from plant based sources.

Don’t let a poor diet get in the way of your well being and quality of life. Combining a healthy diet and a consistent exercise program is a delectable way to achieve some pretty sweet health.
